People usually perceive monasteries are as religious centers. Many, however, often begin as centers of instruction and focal points of learning. This was the case in the establishment of the Augustinian Monastery in Trebon. The Rožmberks, an important family in the region, founded the order here in 1367 with the intent of creating a religious as well as an educational and artistic center. They succeeded. Trebon became a place of knowledge and artistic expression.

Time has created a different monastery. The original Gothic structure is gone. What remains is a mainly 18th century complex. If you wish to catch a glimpse of the early Gothic glory of the monastery, visit the cloister and the Chapel of St. John the Baptist. These two areas remain Gothic in character and design. Examine the Madonna and Child. Its delicate curves are reminders of the late Gothic style. After the Chapel, wander the rest of the Monastery. From there, it is an easy trip from the Monastery to visit the adjoining church or the local Chateau. They are all intricately connected.
