One of the most powerful families in Southern Bohemia was the Schwarzenbergs. Live or dead, they favored the town of Trebon. They lived a very public life at first the Castle, then the Trebon Chateau. Their homes filled the center of the old town. They attended church openly. Their place of death, however, was far removed from the hustle and bustle of the inner town.

The Schwarzenberg Mausoleum is on the southeast shore of the Rybník Svět – the large fishpond. It sits alone in the park. Construction began in 1875 and finished in 1877. What you see is a two-storied neo-gothic chapel and crypt with a tower and a huge staircase. The final resting place is of burnt brick. The interior is plaster masquerading as stone. The floor is octagonal. Below the chapel is the underground crypt. Here the coffins of the Schwarzenbergs lie. One lies separate from the others. It is a tiny baby, the illegitimate child of Caroline. A small vessel nearby contains its tiny heart.
