Chateaux are common in the Czech Republic. They frequently emerge from the detritus of a former castle. This is the case with the Chateau in Trebon. A Renaissance structure, it stands on the site of a former Gothic Castle. It is in the main square. Today, it is as famous for its former inhabitants as for its interior and exterior.

The Renaissance building is literally smothered in brilliant white sgraffito across its rather mundane façade. The interiors feature Baroque and 19th century furniture imported by the Schwarzenbergs. The most famous resident, however, was Petr Vok. A friend of the mad Emperor, Rudolph II, he had a taste for drugs and sex and a fondness for alchemy. He used the chateau to hold some wild parties. You can tour his Renaissance rooms as well as the more sedate if heavily decorated Baroque rooms of the Schwarzenbergs. The Castle also houses a Museum on the area as well as priceless documents in the regional archives.
