Most visitors who come to cheap hotels in Zdar nad Sazavou want to see the magnificent Cistercian monastery about three kilometers (two miles) out of town. The huge monastery complex was designed by Giovanni Santini, considered to be the most brilliant architect of the Czech Counter-Reformation. He had a great talent for blending Gothic and Baroque forms. To get to the monastery, you must cross a small bridge decorated with the figures of 18th century saints. One of the most intriguing structures within the complex is the Zelena hora (Green Hill) pilgrimage church, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Built in 1720 and dedicated to St. John Nepomuk, this church is considered to be one of Santini’s most eccentric works. Its design and decoration consistently allude to the number five. It is a star-shaped church with zigzagging cloisters and many images of the martyrdom of St. John. In the Muzeum knihy (Book Museum), there is a small exhibition dedicated to Santini. The ponds and woods outside the monastery are pleasant for walking after you’ve toured the site.
