From your pleasant discount hotel in Copenhagen near the Church of Our Lady, you are just a stroll or a short transit ride from the city’s cathedral. The Church of Our Lady (Vor Frue Kirke in Danish) is just south of the university on a cobbled street called Frue Plads. It is a rather modest looking edifice, considering its important status. The present church dates back only to 1829. It was built to replace an 18th century church, which was destroyed by a British bombardment in 1807 during the Napoleonic Wars. The original 12th century church was gutted by fire.
The Church of Our Lady was designed by Christian Frederik Hansen. He gave the church a rather somber exterior look, but the interior is a magnificent art gallery. It is full of sculptures by Bertel Thorvaldsen, one of Denmark’s most famous artists. Standing along the sides are statues of the Twelve Apostles. At the central section of the altar an angel kneels before a large figure of Christ, which is considered one of Thorvaldsen’s masterpieces. There is also a relief of John the Baptist at the cathedral door. If you come here from your budget hotel in Copenhagen near the Church of Our Lady for a Sunday service, you might even see Queen Margrethe II sitting in the congregation.
