Denmark has a long and distinguished military history. You can get a taste of it if you are staying in a discount hotel in Copenhagen near Kastellet, the oldest military base in Europe that is still in use. Kastellet is near Churchillparken, and is easily recognizable by its ramparts and moats. It was conceived of by King Christian IV, and has been occupied by soldiers since 1660. It is a star shaped fortress of bastions, barracks and storehouses, accessible by two gates; Kongensporten and Norgesporten. This formidable structure was also used as a prison. Count Struensee was locked up here as punishment for having an affair with Princess Caroline Mathilde in the 18th century.

Extensive restorations were done to Kastellet in the 1990s. Visitors can now stroll the ramparts that once protected Copenhagen. The fort’s church sometimes holds free musical concerts on Sundays. Because this is still a working military complex, some areas are off-limits to tourists. Watch for signs that say Adgang Forbudt (No Entry).
