Assistens Kirkegard is the largest cemetery in all of Copenhagen and despite its macabre purpose; the cemetery is a popular place for residents of the city to meet. Assistens Kirkegard was once where smaller churchyards and cemeteries would be relocated to. As the population of Copenhagen grew so did the need for the cemetery and today it is open to the public, both living and dead.

There are plans to turn the churchyard of Assistens Kirkegard into a park since the area is already so popular even with those not visiting loved ones. The surroundings are very beautiful and peaceful and so many people choose to spend afternoons sitting on the benches. There are many celebrities that reside in the Assistens Kirkegard cemetery among them are Hans Christen Andersen, the famous writer of fairy tales such as the Little Mermaid, and Soren Kierkegard the famed philosopher. It is no leap of faith to believe that visitors will love strolling through Assistens Kirkegard.
