From your lodgings in a quiet discount hotel in Copenhagen, you will be able to explore one of the city’s fascinating but often overlooked attractions. And there is no charge for admission. Many people would consider geology to be a tedious, scientific subject, best left to professors and students. But the Geological Museum (Geologisk in Danish) proves it is actually a very compelling subject.
The Geological Museum is located at the northeastern corner of Botanisk Have, at the junction of Solvgade and Oster Volgade. It is housed in a beautiful old university building. The exhibits show how geological forces shaped the Earth and life on it. In addition to a vast collection of minerals, the museum has a magnificent display of meteorites. They came from a major fall that occurred thousands of years ago in Cape York, Greenland. Some of them have been cut into huge slices that produced unusual mirror-like effects. The two biggest specimen, named Savik and Agpalilik, are displayed outside. You will also see the world’s largest mussel, which was also found in Greenland. It is 178 cm long, and 83 million years old. A short walk or an easy transit ride from any budget hotel in Copenhagen near the Geological Museum will take you to this unique attraction.
