You can find every sort of accommodation, from expensive hotels to discount hotels, near the National Museum of Denmark in Copenhagen. Known as the Nationalmuseet, this magnificent institution is a must-see, and it is free. The museum is partly housed in an elegant 18th century royal palace. It contains the most comprehensive collection anywhere of Danish artifacts from prehistoric times to the present. All displays are well-labeled in English. However, the undisputed star of the Museum is the all-new show called Prehistoric Denmark and the Viking Age. Here, stunning galleries display artifacts from over 14,000 years of history. Many of the objects were preserved in peat bogs. You will see pre-historic tools, necklaces and amber pieces. You will also see the skulls of human victims who were sacrificed to the gods. In the Bronze Age section there are coffins that contain the desiccated remains of humans. The best preserved is the Egtved Girl. The Iron Age collection includes the famous Golden Horns.
