    Rosenborg Castle Gardens Details

Rosenborg Castle (Rosenborg Slot in Danish) is surrounded by gardens that make up the oldest and most beautiful park in Copenhagen. Locals call it Kongens Have, which translates as Kings Park or Royal Gardens. It was established by King Christian IV in 1606 as a place where the Royal Family could grow vegetables and flowers. The gardens are still laid out much as the king planned them. You can take a short walk from the palace down to the entrance on Gothersgade. There you can see two large plinths that mark what was once a jousting field. Close by is the Hercules Pavilion where there is a café. The adjacent childrens play area is complete with dragons. Here you can also see a statue of Denmarks most famous writer, Hans Christian Andersen. Concerts and theater performances are held in the park during the summer. The puppet shows are especially popular with children.
