Royal Danish Theater is a late 19th century building at the southern end of the square, known locally as Det Kongelige Teater. Famed storyteller Hans Christian Andersen once tried, and failed, to court a ballerina here. The theater was one of the few places where ballet, opera and drama were all performed under one roof. Now only ballet is performed on the venerable stage.

In 1931 an addition was built onto the theater so that it now has two main sections; the Italianate Old Stage, and the Danish Art Deco style Staerekassen. The entrance is adorned with statues of two of Denmark’s great men of letters, poet Adam Oehlenschlager and playwright Ludvig Holberg.
