Most tourists go to the Dominican Republic for the tropical sun and the sandy beaches. However, if you are a car racing enthusiast, then you might want to spend an exciting day at the races. The Las Americas Race Track runs for 1.6 miles (2.6 km), and has 11 turns on a permanent asphalt road. The track is considered to be quite challenging, even though it is short.
This race track opened in 1998 and is a very modern facility. It can hold up to 15,000 spectators, and has the added advantage of a view of the Caribbean Sea. Races are held every Saturday at 5 o’clock pm. On October 31, 2004, the American GT Road Racing Association concluded its inaugural season at this track. That event featured an exciting finish between Charles Webster of Canada and Edison Lluch of Puerto Rico, with Webster winning the championship. In March 2005 this track hosted the Miller Grand-Am Cup 200. Before planning to come here, check the schedule to see what events are forthcoming. You might be there at the right time to see a championship competition.
