Dublin Castle

Situated in the heart of Dublin, Dublin Castle brings to life the fascinating history of the city and of the country it calls home. Through out the years, the Castle has fulfilled a number of occupations. Its primary role was to serve as a royal residence, resided in by the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland or Viceroy of Ireland, the representative of the King or Queen. The Viceregal Apartments, now called the State Apartments, are one of the most magnificant sites in Dublin, and they also serve as the location of the inauguration of the President of Ireland. The second in command in the Dublin Castle administration, the Chief Secretary for Ireland, also kept his offices there. Through the years, parliament and the law courts met at Dublin Castle, before moving to their existing locations. Dublin Castle now houses an arts centre and occasional concerts are held in its grounds. The Castle is usually open to the public, except during state functions. Among the areas open for viewing are St. Patrick's Hall, the ballroom in which state presidential inaugurations take place, the Throne Room, containing a throne from the reign of King William III, and the Viceregal Apartments, which include the rooms once used by visiting members of the Royal Family.
