Saqarra, located just south of Cairo was home to many Old Kingdom monuments among them the Pyramid of Pepi II. Pepi II is most known for the longevity of his reign, lasting for approximately 94 years. He was among the last Old Kingdom Pharaohs and his funerary complex was among the last of its kind. By the looks of his pyramid and the crumbling complex, it is easy to assume that Pepi II ruled before the knowledge of constructing the Great Pyramid came into being. However, Pepi II had his pyramid constructed well afterwards. Even though this pyramid complex is not as impressive as the ones at Giza, it is still worth a visit.
Inside Pepi II’s pyramids can be found the Pyramid Text; hieroglyphics that adorn the chambers and walls of the monument. Stars and other scenes are also painted here and are an astounding view of funerary art of the time. A short distance from the Step Pyramid and located close to Cairo, visiting the pyramid of Pepi II is not a difficult task.
