Cairo is not a typical modern city, enjoying a rich and deep history. Certainly the part most frequented by tourists, such as the hotel district, is more modern. Visitors should not miss out the opportunity to see the medieval quarter.
Also called the Islamic Cairo, the medieval part of Cairo is an impressive display of architecture dating back centuries. Here the influences of Islam are more felt as there are numerous mosques on each street. Visitors will feel as if they had stepped back in time as they tour the streets and browse the many bazaars. Workshops dating back to the district’s construction are still in use and visitors can watch the skilled craftsman work. There is a sense of exotic wonder in Medieval Cairo even though it is nestled among the more urban areas. This district is perfect for picking up small trinkets or just exploring for a day.
