Saqarra has many interesting monuments dating back to the reign of the Pharaohs. The Serapeum is one of these places and holds an intriguing purpose. Worship of animals was not unheard of in Egypt and most of Gods and Goddesses were associated with an animal. These animals were believed to be earthly incarnations of the Deities and were held in great reverence. The Apis Bull was associated with Ptah who was the god of creation and fertility. The Bull was placed in the temple and worshiped until its death and then was mummified and entombed at the Serapeum.

The Step Pyramid is not situated too far from the Serapeum and savvy visitors can still see this ancient place. Saqarra is not too far from Cairo and can easily be reached by bus or over the Nile River. The practice of the Apis Bull cult survived until the Ptolemys. The Serapeum represents a little known aspect of ancient Egyptian worship; that of animal cults and worship and while not as breathtaking as the pyramids, this monument does provide an interesting glimpse into ancient life.
