Baharia Oasis Hotels and Accommodation
Matruh is the port for this area of Egypt, and is also a seaside resort. The Baharia Oasis is about 300 km from Cairo, Egypt. It is in the middle of the western part of the desert, which is the section known as the Black and White desert. This oasis is in a dip in the desert, a huge dip that covers more than 2000 square km. The sand is white, as it is really chalk, and the hills that surround the desert are black, as they are made out of dolorite and ferruginous quartzite. This oasis gets its water from several natural springs, including a thermal spring said to have healing powers. Golden mummies are said to be sprinkled throughout the desert – up to 10,000 of them. There are organized tours that will allow you to see the structures that are left in the desert. They include a Roman fortress, which is more than likely the largest of the ruins that you will see. Then, there is the Roman Palace, which takes up 4 acres of land and is said to be the largest Roman palace in all of Egypt. Some excavation has taken place, and walls painted and decorated with pictures have been unearthed.
A wine factory has been unearthed, as wine has always been made in this area, and still is for that matter – just not in the same factory. It is thought that the wine produced in ancient times was the reason that the people who lived on the oasis were able to accumulate the wealth that they had while living there. This wine was considered to be the finest wine made in all of Egypt. The Basilica, a church built in the 5th century, has been excavated, and the sand has revealed several rather roughly drawn portraits of Jesus Christ.
