Egypt has one of the holiest places in the Christian mythos; the mountain Moses descended with the Ten Commandments. It is also the place that Mohammed’s horse ascended to heaven and therefore holds a special interest among Islam as a holy place. Mount Sinai is located on the Sinai Peninsula and is actually a grouping of peaks known as the Holy Mountains. The area around Mount Sinai has many biblical sights such as the burning bush located at the Monastery of St. Catherine which is not too far from the base of Mount Sinai.
Pilgrims flock to this area each year for the religious significance, though the natural wonders of this mountainous region should not be missed by the average tourists. Most of the area is suitable for hiking or light climbing where visitors can enjoy the sights. There are several structures dating before the medieval era that tourists can visit. Mount Sinai is a wonderful experience not only for the biblical and religious history but for the majesty of the mountains.
