Saint Catherine’s Monastery located in Egypt is steeped in a deep religion past centering one of the most venerated relics of Christianity. At the foot of Mount Moses, the monastery has Moses’ Burning Bush as a centerpiece. Commissioned by Emperor Justinian some time between 527 and 565, this chapel houses several pieces of amazing artwork. Mosaics, oil paintings, marbles, and Greek and Russian icons are just a few of what Saint Catherine’s Monastery holds. The Saint Catherine’s Monastery is perhaps most famous for the collection of illuminated manuscripts consisting of 4,500 volumes in several languages such as Coptic, Arabic and Areminan.
Visitors to Saint Catherine’s Monastery are awed by the fact that this monastery is still working and is the smallest diocese in the world. The Saint Catherine’s Monastery features granite walls reaching up to 35 meters. A formidable fort, the Monastery has withstood several attacks to survive to the modern times.
