There are two Universities in Tallinn, Estonia. There is the University of Tallinn. This is an academic university with emphasis on the social sciences and the humanities. There is also the Tallinn University of Technology. Its focus is on the purely practical arts.
Tallinn University of Technology consists of 4 colleges and research and development institutions as well as 8 faculties. Its origins date back to 1918 with the desire by the Estonian Engineering Society to open a school for special training in the field of engineering. Various types of programs in the field of engineering drew students from across the country. By 1936, the school had evolved into the Tallinn Technical University. The two faculties at the time – chemistry and mining, and civil and mechanical engineering, grew to include the Faculty of Economics in 1940 and the Faculty of Power Engineering in 1958. Eleven years later came the Faculty of Control Engineering. Today, the University operates at the campus and in the field, providing a highly valuable and practical education. It also provides support services in research and information to different centers throughout Estonia.
