One of the premier airports in Finland’s capital city of Helsinki, the Helsinki-Malmi Airport (or in Finnish, Helsinki-Malmin lentoasema) is located in the Malmi district, about ten kilometers north east from the center of the city. Helsinki-Malmi Airport was the most important airport to the city, and in fact, to the rest of Finland, until 1952, when the Helsinki-Vantaa Airport was constructed. The Helsinki-Malmi Airport still finds use as a general airport, though.
The future of this airport remains in the balance, though, as there have been plans to close the airport down and replace it with a residential area. It remains uncertain whether or not this plan will ever be put into effect, as there are many in Finland who protest the destruction of this important landmark. Helsinki-Malmi was the first airport in Helsinki and first became operational in 1936. The main purpose of the airport is now in the education of professional pilots and flight enthusiasts.
