Situated in the Ekenas archipelago of Southern Finland, the Ekenas Archipelago National Park was first established in 1989. The park covers about fifty two square kilometers, or twenty square miles, of the area, and is maintained by Finland’s Ministry of Forestry; Metsahallitus. The park is largely comprised of small islets of rock, situated in waters by the open sea. Visitors are allowed to explore the park to their heart’s content, however, boat access to the bird islands is forbidden throughout part of the year (April first to July 17) so as to protect the nesting grounds of aquatic birds during mating season.
To access the park, you will need to board a water taxi or rent a boat of your own, as the area can only be accessed by water. In 1996, the park received the European Diploma of Protected Areas, a status that remains valid until the year 2011.
