A must for fans of classical musical styles, Helsinki Alexander Theater, or in Finnish, the Aleksanterin Teatteri, is a beautiful theater sitting in the heart of downtown Finland, just ten minutes from the railway station, if you’re walking. This elaborate old fashioned theater showcases opera productions from various performance groups. Most of the opera performances are in Finnish, though the National Opera performances provide translations with the programs for all of their performances. The sound carries very well in this building, which has incredible acoustics in the old architecture.
Besides opera, symphonic performances and classical theater, ballet shows are also held here quite often, and are recommended for non-Finnish visitors, as the lack of spoken or sung dialogue will provide a less confusing experience. Ticket prices vary from show to show, but, in general, are reasonable. As with any opera house anywhere else in the world, formal attire is preferred.
