Hiidenportti National Park, or as it is known in Finnish, Hiidenportin Kansallispuisto, can be found in the Oulu Province of Finland. Hiidenportti National Park was established as a means of preserving the threatened wilderness found in the Kainuu Regions of Finland. Here you’ll find a varied mix of mires and dry forests, giving the park its own distinctive landscape. The near natural state forests of the park are one hundred to one hundred and fifty years old on average, with two thirds of the park being made up of coniferous forestation. No logging has been conducted here since the beginning of the twentieth Century.
Visitors wishing to get a good look at the flora and fauna of Hiidenportti National Park would be advised to take a hike along one of the many hiking trails provided herein, or else to bring their mountain bike, and check out the rare birds that stay temporarily during migratory seasons. Perhaps the most popular site here would be the Hiisi’s gate, or the Hiidenportti, which the park derives its name from. This gate is actually a gulley with vertical cliffs, and an excellent photo opportunity.
