Temppeliaukion Kirkko is considered by many to be one of the most incredible success stories in the recent history of architecture in Helsinki. This novel building ruffled some feathers thanks to a large hole in the granite outcrop, and a complete lack of ornamentation, or even a belfry or an altar. Today, the critics of these unusual design choices have mostly come around and accepted the building as a fascinating display of imagination and innovation, and it receives about a half a million tourists a year, coming to photograph the bizarre architecture.
The temple carries a certain feeling of security, thanks to the stone walls and high metal ceiling. These two elements also provide the building with an incredible acoustic chamber, making it very popular for musical events and even some recordings. Many of the world’s best organ players have been attracted to the site for the sake of the acoustics alone.
