The King’s Road is one of the defining features of the Finland landscape. Winding through a route that takes it through every major capital city of Finland, from Oslo to Stockholm to Turku to Helsinki and finally to Saint Petersburg, the road was first built in the thirteenth century and winds along coastal routes, taking the traveler past castles, mansions and quaint cottages. In the past, the King’s Road served as an important means of travel between the most powerful kingdoms in Sweden and Russia, and today, it stands as a major cultural artifact.
Traveling along the path, you’ll see ancient inns and taverns, some in ruins and some still intact, as well as old stone churches and abandoned iron mills. The path can be attempted on foot, starting in any of the major cities it passes through, or you can join one of the tours which take visitors along this historic route. Either way, the King’s Road is an unforgettable trail, passing by countless sites of historical significance.
