Those looking for culture in Finland would be wise to take a tour of the various museums and galleries of the capital city of Helsinki. One of the most important museums here is the Kiasma, which you will immediately spot thanks to its one-of-a-kind architectural style, having been designed from an idea by architect Steven Holl. In fact, its name is meant to evoke the idea itself, kiasma being the Finnish word for chiasma, which the design makes allusion to. The design was a result of an architectural design competition held in 1992. The competition was held between five architects of international renown, with Steven Holl having been the only American participant, as the contest was primarily intended for Nordic and Baltic designers.
The main art collection on display here is the Finnish National Gallery, which was founded in 1990. The central goal of this gallery, from the start, has been to spread knowledge and acceptance of contemporary art, in an attempt to strengthen the status of the form in world art culture.
