The largest art university in all of the Nordic countries, the University of Art and Design was founded in 1871. Within the confines of this house of learning, you’ll also find the Media Center Lume, or the National Research and Development Center of Audiovisual Media. The university offers such academic degrees as Bachelor of Arts, Licentiate of Arts and Doctor of arts. The ratio of foreign students to Finnish students is unusually high in comparison to other Finnish universities, making this the most popular Finnish university at which for students to study abroad.
The university has a reputation as being very active in establishing both research projects and industry collaborations. The university is currently presided over by Rector Yrjo Sotama, and other notable faculty and alumni include Tapio Wirkkala, Timo Sarpaneva and the late Kaj Franck, an important figure in the development and propagation of Finnish design. The degree programs here are organized into six different schools: The Media Lab, the School of Design, the School of Art Education, the School of Visual Culture, and the School of Art and Media Pori.
