If you can spare more than a weekend, the Alpes-Maritimes can show you any number of sights. There are the rich villas of the Cap d’Antibes set on a rocky forested, peninsula. There is Cannes, linked inextricably with its film festival and the fields of lavender surrounding Grasse with its International Museum of Perfume. Visit the Îsles de Lérins, off the coast of Cannes. Here, on Île Sainte-Marguerite, is the fortress where a king imprisoned the Man in the Iron Mask. In Cannes, you can climb the slopes of Mont Chevalier to see part of the old city wall. There is also the church, Notre Dame de l’Espérance in Provencal Gothic, the gardens lining La Croisette and the Museum of the Castle. If you make a trip to Cagnes-sur-Mer, you can see the Château Grimaldi and a 200-year-old Pepper tree as well as the Renoir Museum.
