Located along the Cote d’Azur’s French Riviera region of southern France, Cannes is probably best known for the international film festival held there annually. Since it became synonymous with Hollywood and movie stars, quite a few Cannes hotels were built to accommodate the masses. Sailing, swimming, and shopping are the three preferred activities for most visitors to Cannes, however there are also historical landmarks and many cultural events to enjoy. The Festival and Congress Centres are popular venues for the visual and performing arts. Be sure to stroll along the Alles de la Liberte Charles de Gaulle which winds through the town’s city center and visit the Gare Maritime and the Vieux Port, or Old Port. The flower market, or Marche aux Fleurs and the City Hall, or Hotel de Ville are also worth visiting. A hike to the Cannes Castle on a hill overlooking the resort is a wonderful way to experience the area’s history and the Musee de la Castre, also located there, contains a fine collection of artifacts. The Notre Dame Esperance Church next door is noted for its architecture.
