The 18th century saw an upsurge of opera and theater houses in Nice. Spurred on by the influence of the Italians, the Nice Opera emerged as a triumph of the architect François Aume. Construction began in 1884 and concluded in 1885. The structure soon became a central fixture for music lovers in the city. In the 19th century, Italian composers retained central stage. Berlioz, Verdi, Puccini and Offenbach were often performed.

Today, the Nice Opera remains home to large-scale operas. You can also attend performances by the Nice Symphony Orchestra. These are two good reasons to leave your charming cheap hotel in Nice near the Nice Opera for an evening. Pay a visit to admire this product of the Second Empire. The exterior with its four statues of the Muses of Music and Theater and the interior have suffered renovations. The Great Hall remains Italianate in style. Its three rows of boxes can fit 102 persons in each row. There is also room for 220 in the auditorium and 300 in “paradise.” Admire the nine Muses of the vault. This is the work of Emmanuel Costa. The foyer and the bar feature frescoes by Jean Vigna.
