Located in the heart of Mediterranean France, the War Memorial is, as one might imagine, quite grandiose and imposing (as is fitting for the French Riviera). Staying in a budget hotel near the War Memorial in Nice can be a sobering experience, but also a very positive one; besides, there are many other attractions nearby as well, making this a very convenient location. Just a short walk from the Port of Nice on Castle Hill, the War Memorial itself is carved right into the side of the cliffs that overlook the nearby Mediterranean Sea.

The Memorial consists of a small staircase leading up to a gazebo-like structure under several classical arches that invoke the best of French architecture. The whole thing is wrought out of brilliant white marble, such that it can easily be seen from across the bay, or even far out at sea, sometimes serving as a beacon glistening in the sun and calling out to sailors as they near their home port. Moreover, it is a brilliant example of naturalist architecture, seeming to extend directly out of the face of the cliffs, as a natural feature in itself, akin to the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright.
