The 18th century saw an upsurge of opera and theater houses in Nice. Spurred on by the influence of the Italians, the Nice Opera emerged as a triumph of the architect François Aume. Construction began in 1884 and concluded in 1885. The structure soon became a central fixture for music lovers in the city. In the 19th century, Italian composers retained central stage. Berlioz, Verdi, Puccini and Offenbach were often performed.Today, the Nice Opera remains home to large-scale operas. You can also attend performances by the Nice Symphony Orchestra.
