The Matisse Museum is one of the best Nice attractions that you should not miss. It is located on the hill of Cimiez, which is not far away from the Hotel Regina where Matisse lived, the Franciscan monastery with its Italianate gardens and the Gallo-Roman ruins. Since January 5, 1963, the museum with its collection of works left by Matisse and his heirs to Nice opened its doors to visitors. The artist lived in the city from 1918 until 1954. The impressive collection of art works left by Matisse to the city of Nice not only span his entire career, it also offers an insight into the influences that governed his life as well as his character.
There are an estimated 70 paintings and gouaches, nearly 60 sculptures, more than 200 drawings and 100 photographs that include the ones taken in Tahiti. Some 187 of the personal belongings of Matisse are also in the museum. The collection in the museum is one of the most important in the whole world making it among the greatest Nice attractions.
