The Abbaye Saint-Victor is one of the attractions in Marseille that should be made an important part in any tourist's itinerary. This is not only because of the structure's beauty, but also because of its significance in the development of Christianity in the Mediterranean.

Located right above the dry dock of the southern bank of Marseille's Vieux-Port, the abbey was founded during the 15th century. This was right on the tomb of Saint-Victor, an ancient martyr who was a significant player in development of the Mediterranean's Christianity between the 11th and 18th centuries. The fortification of this abbey was commisioned by Pope Urbain V during the 14th century. Known to be among the best attractions in Marseille, the abbey has catacombs and crypts containing ancient sarcophagi that can be viewed by visitors. The exemplary acoustics of the abbey also makes it an ideal venue for the classical and religious music concerts that are hosted here regularly. During the Fete de la Chandeleur or Candlemas in February, large crowds are also drawn to the special ceremonies held in the abbey.
