In the Charente Valley, you can find the white village of Aubeterre-sur-Dronne. You can visit Aubeterre’s Église St. Jean, carved out of the chalky white cliffs. Some of this church dates to the 6th century. Charente can then introduce you to the fine process of making and shipping cognac. It is a port city where storehouses literally breathe out Cognac. The Cognac museum tells the story of the city and its major product. You can sample the product and see the process at several of the “châteaux.” Château François, an architectural pleasure on its own, is home to Otard Cognac. For those whose interest extends beyond this wine, there is hiking in the valley and nearby towns, such as Angoulême to visit. In this city, you can view the 15th century tower where Marguerite d’ Angoulême was born.
