    Steeped in history and the capital of Black Perigord, Sarlat-la-Canéda or just Sarlat has over 1000 years of history to explore within the town. Sarlat-la-Canéda has existed since the 8th century and grew around the Benedictine abbey of Carolingian. It was at the centre of the Hundred Years War between England and France, becoming English very briefly in 1360 following the Treaty of Brétigny and returning to France ten years later. Henry IV established the Cathedral of Saint Saint-Sacerdos and the town retains its medieval charm today. The House of la Boëtie with its elegant Renaissance architecture is one of the well known attractions in Sarlat-la-Canéda as the home of the humanist writer and poet Etienne de la Boétie .Gastronomic delicacies include foie gras, and Sarlat hosts a market each Wednesday and Saturday where local produce can be purchased. Sarlat-la-Canéda is situated near to some of the most impressive and romantic chateaux in France such as the Chateau de Castelnaud, and is ideally situated for further exploration into the Dordogne.
