Le Puy en Valey, is located in the area called Occitan, in the Haute-Loire départmente of south-central France. In medieval times, it was a major bishopric. The most striking site there is the cathedral of Notre Dame, which was built chiefly in the first half of the 12th Century. Since 1998, the Cathedral is a UNESCO World Heritage sight, since it's part of the “Routes of Santiago de Compostela in France”, still one of France's main pilgrimage routes. Near the Cathedral is the 11th Century baptistery of St. John, which is built on a foundation dating from Roman times. About three miles away from Le Puy en Valey are the remains of the Château de Polignac, which was one of France's most important feudal strongholds. Perhaps the most famous (to Americans, anyway) native of the area was the Marquis de La Fayette, whose aid was instrumental during the Revolutionary War. He was born, in 1757, a few miles away at the Château de Chavagnac.
