The Lac d'Annecy is the second largest lake that can be found in France, after Lac du Bourget. Because of the strict regulations on the environment that were introduced by the local authority in the 1960s, this lake is regarded as the cleanest lake in Europe. In line with this, the lake is also a popular destination for tourists where outdoor activities in Annecy such as swimming and water sports can be done. The lake is said to be formed some 18,000 years ago, during the time of the huge alpine glaciers. Its waters come from many small rivers from the mountains that surround it, as well as from the Bouboiz which is a powerful underwater source that enters the lake at a depth of 82 miles.
