Thônes is part of the Haute-Savoie region of France, at the bottom of Mont Aravis, dating from at least 1066 (first historical mention). There is a rock at the road linking Thônes to Geneva (through the defile of Dingy) that has been engraved with ”Lucius Tincius Pasculus per vium,” indicating that Tincius (a Roman lord) was responsible for building the road. It lies between Annecy and La Clusaz, and is accessible from the airports at Annecy (Meythet), Geneva (Cointrin), and Chambery (Challes les Eaux). Cheese lovers will note that Thônes is the only place in the world that true Reblochon cheese is made, and you can visit a small cheese factory and see it being made. For the athletically inclined, there is a steep rock-climbing area outside the town proper. You can also go skiing or hiking. Visit the little chapel at the col des Annes near La Cluzas or the nearby Castle of Menthon (basis for Disney's Sleeping Beauty Castle).
Thônes was very active in resisting the Nazis during World War II. After a long day of hiking or climbing, relax over a good meal at one of Thônes dining establishments, such as the Auberge la Gloriette, Bar des Arcades, Bar Tabac le Savoy, Cafe de Morette, Cafe du Marche, Chez Bruno, Mountain Cafe, Palacios Charles, Pizzeria Grill la Chaumine, Restaurant de la Pisciculture, Restaurant La Resse, or the Roll and Pub.
