Arreau is a great place for a skiing or snowboarding getaway! Located in the Hautes-Pyrénées, in southwestern France, it is at the crossroads of the Louron and Aure valleys, near what used to be the Route nationale 618 (the Route of the Pyrenees). Accessible from four airports, Lourdes, Antichan, Lamothe, and Pau Pyrenees, Arreau is one of the most popular skiing and snowboarding areas in France. When not enjoying the Arreau slopes, you will want to give the Nestes castle (containing a museum about Pyrenean life), and the corbeled houses of the village a visit. Also, don't miss the Eglise St. Exupere (a 13th century church with both an octagonal tower and Romanesque doorways), and the 16th century House of Lillies. Check out the apiary in the town square, where you can sample and buy fresh honey. You can also go on walking tours, and even bird walks (including visiting the Volerie des Pyrenees, an eagle sanctuary, where you can watch shows with real flying eagles). Bike or hike up (and back down) the Col d'Aspin. After a long day of skiing, walking, biking, or birdwatching, enjoy a good meal in Arreau, at either the Bar du Peyresourde or La Crepe d'Aure.
