Although located in a beautiful area in the Pyrenees, the town of Lourdes was just a market town set on the mountains until the year 1858. This was the year when the town was pushed into the limelight and became not only one of the tourist destinations in France but also one of the most significant pilgrimage sites of the Roman Catholics in the whole world.
One of the attractions in Lourdes is the Miraculous Cave, where fourteen-year old Bernadette Soubirous had a series of apparitions of the Virgin Mary. The start of these apparitions in this very cave was what catapulted the town into what it is now. As among the most frequented attractions in Lourdes, the cave, with its walls that have been rubbed smooth by the millions of people who visit it annually, is open the whole year through. The cave is where everything started for the town of Lourdes and it is where a lot of people found strength in their faith.
