The town of Estrelles is found in the Ile et Vilaine department, to the northwest of Argentre-de-Plessis. The name of the village comes from the word ‘strata,’ referring to the stratifications in the Roman roads that used to cross the area. In 1589, the village was burnt down by the Hugenots, so unfortunately there is little to no trace left of any monuments dated earlier than the late 16th century. In fact, today’s village was built mostly between the 16th and 19th centuries, though there have been a number of renovations since then. Although the parish church was spared in the 1589 fire, it was destroyed in a fire in 1891. Today’s structure dates from just after the fire and was rebuilt in the gothic style.
