In the department of Landes, the town of Grenad-sur-l’Adour is a bastide, a type of medieval fortress town that was built in 1322. Although on French soil, the town was founded by the English in 1322 in order to establish a stronghold in the area. By 1442, the French had reclaimed the town. The name means ‘town rich in grains,’ and it has a long history of being an important commercial center.As you leave your hotel, you’ll find small, picturesque streets that are a combination of fortified areas and beautiful residences. The Church of Grenade is a 15th century gothic style church. Additional buildings and internal structures were added in the 18th century. On the Place de Grenade sur l’Adour, two sides still have the original arcades. And throughout town, there are a few little shelter type houses called Abri, which are a unique feature in Grenade-sur-l’Adour. They were built during a period of Basque occupation and influence.
