The ancient city of Châlons en Champagne is the prefecture of the département of Marne as well as the région of Champagne-Ardenne in France. Not only is Châlons en Champagne the seat of the Catholic diocese, but it contains one of the most beautiful churches in the Champagne region, Notre-Dame-en-Vaux, which was built in the 12th and 13th centuries with Troyes Windows of lovely stained glass and four towers. Visitors interested in architecture will enjoy a visit to the Musée du Cloître, with its sculptured columns and capitals. The Cathedral of St-Etienne also contains some fine stained glass, a treasury, and a Romanesque tower in the choir section. Another must see destination is the Porte Ste-Croix, which was built in honor of Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette.
