Staying in a discount hotel near the Les Invalides in Paris is a great way to take in some of the local history with a unique perspective. The Les Invalides themselves are a mass of buildings containing a huge number of monuments and museums, all with a militaristic bent, demonstrating the great extent to which military campaigns and culture have shaped the history of the country as a whole. Here, you can find the Musee de l’Armee, the Musee des Plans-Reliefs, and even a contemporary history museum.

More than the museums, however, many visitors come here to see the tombs and vaults located on the grounds. Here are buried and enshrined some of the most important military figures of France’s long history including, perhaps most significantly, Napoleon Bonaparte himself. Of course, he lies in good company, situated near Jean de Lattre de Tassingny, the famous World War II commander, and Philippe Leclerc de Hauteclocque, one of the most decorated heroes of that same conflict.
