"Good Location?"

The service was good with nice multilingual staff.The beds were comfortable and the room was clean.The hotel is renovating the second floor and work starts early. This work has knocked the air con out so it didn't work in the room or throughout the hotel. Apparently this has been the case since the height of the summer, so 'we were lucky' that we were there in September according to staff. Opening the window could cool down the room at night but there was a lot of noise from the street so you had to keep the window shut and stay warm. Fan provided. Good double glazing.The location is lively and you may need to avoid the street drinkers and rough sleepers in the area but if you can deal with this it is a good geographic location 2 mins from metro station. A few pubs and some nice eateries locally.

"Hotel Aulivia Opera, Paris"

The hotel was ideally located for the purpose of my wife's and my quick one night visit - it is a short walk from Gare du Nord and we were attending a drama school end of course show in the next street. The area is busy, ethnically varied, interesting and full of bars/restaurants - but it is not the smartest or most elegant part of the city. Although our room was quite small, this is not unusual in Paris hotels and, for the price, this hotel was better than most. The room was clean and quiet (looking onto an inner courtyard) until workmen started operating at around 8am next morning! Airconditioning seemed to have been turned off, but we had a fan and kept the window open at night. The bathroom was small but perfectly acceptable. Service was good - English spoken and a taxi ordered in the morning. We would stay there again if visiting that part of Paris.

Pros: A courtesy tray (tea,coffee,kettle etc) was provided promptly on demand at 22.30 by the receptionist.
staff were generally courteous and helpful, though not perhaps as knowledgeable as i would have wished.

Cons: No negative experiences of the hotel itself,it was very good of it's type. the tiny shower was a tad difficult to cope with because of it's size but that was not serious.
the neighbourhood is a bit of a mixed bag but we (an elderly couple) did not find it unduly intimidating and the bar/cafe on the corner was very busy and enjoyable

"Relatively close to the train station"

Pros: Relatively close to the train station. staff was friendly and helpful.
Cons: Room was dirty - mildew in the shower (no working fan), cobwebs on the walls. view was terrible - we were looking at the backside of the adjacent building just a few feet away. room was loud - we were right next to the rickety, old elevator and were woken up every time someone used it. plus, the walls were very thin - we could hear the people talking as they got off the elevator, as well as the shower running in the next room. the hotel was also under construction while we were there (more noise). the elevator was not an issue the second night we were there, as it was out of service. we had to drag out luggage down four flights of a narrow, winding staircase to check out.
