The Porte Saint Denis is a triumphal arch constructed in 1672 to honor Louis XIV’s victories in Franche-Comte and on the Rhine. Designed by architect Francois Blondel and crafted by sculptor Michel Anguier, the arch replaced a gate that had been part of the medieval wall constructed by Charles V. The arch itself was inspired by the Arch of Titus in Rome. It has a prominent central arch that is flanked by two smaller arches. The center arch towers 24.6 meters in height and is 25 meters long. Raised sculptures that pay homage to Louis’ military prowess adorn the grand structure.
