Featuring some attractive classic hotels, the oldest planned square in Paris is known as the Place des Vosges and is located in le Marais. It is part of the 3rd and 4th arrondissements of Paris and was first known as the Place Royale. This was the first project of the royal city's planning and was placed on the site of the Hôtel des Tournelles and its magnificent gardens. Place des Vosges has a brick and stone style of architecture that is very unique in Paris and it features a square design with pristine arcades. Place Royale, as it was then called, was inaugurated in 1612 to coincide with the marriage of Louis XIII and Anne of Austria. The square was later renamed in 1799 when the eastern French department of Vosges – home of Joan of Arc – was the first department to pay the new Revolutionary tax.

Besides its historical importance, Place des Vosges attracts visitors because of its peaceful and refreshing garden. This is an excellent place to begin your day if you plan to visit the Marais district. You can combine the visit with a day of shopping in the nearby Rue des Françs-Bourgeois. The Place des Vosges is surrounded by four metro stations, all within roughly five minutes’ walk. Numerous popular city centre attractions can easily be reached on foot from here. For example, Centre Georges Pompidou lies to the west and Notre Dame Cathedral to the south-west. Place des Vosges’ historical and cultural value is bolstered by Maison de Victor Hugo, which stands on the square’s south-eastern corner and is a former residence of the famous French novelist. Several galleries are also located around Place des Vosges.
