Charonne is one of many metro stations in the Parisian system. It officially opened for travelers in 1933. A part of line 9, the Charonne station is found within the 11th arrondissement of Paris and is named after both the district of Charonne and the Rue de Charonne. Vacationers who book hotels in Paris near Charonne will find themselves staying near the site of the infamous Paris Massacre of 1961. This event involved an attack by the French police on Algerian demonstrators. Many of the demonstrators attempted to take refuge at the Charonne station, but the entrance had been closed. Estimates put the number of deaths from the overall massacre at nearly 200. It is said eight died while trying to enter Charonne.
